Most people sell a business, sell a major property or receive an eminent domain award only once. The tax bill that follows can be the largest of their lives, and there is one chance to plan for it.
By then they usually have a good team: a CPA, an attorney and a financial advisor, each doing their own job well. What is often missing is someone whose job is the tax strategy for the event itself. Nobody dropped the ball. The seat is simply empty, and as Matthew puts it, “the default plan is pay the tax.”
Matthew Chancey, CFP®, fills that seat. He is the Founder of Tax Alpha Companies in Tampa, Florida, and the Bestselling Author of Tax Alpha Solutions (Forbes Books), and he designs tax mitigation strategies for these events.
He knows the client’s position because he has been in it. He was bought out of a small medical device company early in his career, with capital in hand and no one qualified to advise him. He went back to school and has spent the twenty-plus years since sorting what holds up from what doesn’t.
A CPA or attorney who brings in an outside specialist is trusting him with a client, so his terms are plain. He comes in early, ideally one to three years ahead, because once the ink is dry it is tax filing. He works alongside the team already at the table, and the client relationship stays with them.
Eminent domain is a particular focus. When a government agency or utility condemns property, the award carries tax consequences that a 1033 exchange can defer. The largest takings usually arrive with a tax team. Most landowners have only their attorney, whose job is the award, not the tax on it. Matthew works alongside that attorney.
He also coaches CPAs whose high-earning clients overpay year after year, and those clients stay the CPA’s. He teaches CPAs and attorneys, speaks on tax strategy at industry due diligence conferences, and his commentary appears in national outlets including The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, CNBC, MarketWatch and Morningstar.

“I went through the purchases of properties, the development of real estate, the sales, and the aftermath of a construction project,” he recalls. “As it turns out, taxes came up at every point of the journey.”
This realization became pivotal in his career. Matthew became engrossed in every aspect of the tax codes surrounding these major transactions. Where tens of millions were spent, millions of dollars would be flushed down unnecessarily. Today, he is ensuring clients are paying only what they owe and not a cent more. Built upon his layers of education and real-world experience, Matthew’s innovative strategies are setting the pace for the industry.
“These solutions pack a punch: they make a significant impact on clients’ lifestyles and offer a great monetary reward to the financial professionals who put them into practice,” Matthew says. “Best of all, they’re perfectly legal and readily available.”
